Dignity in Dying – The campaign to legalise assisted dying

When you work in public affairs you lobby, you advocate, you campaign, you create messaging and narratives, but ultimately this is all about the end goal of legislation. Achieving an Act of Parliament is the holy grail of public affairs.

We’ve been on a long journey with our client Dignity in Dying for many years as they’ve campaigned to legalise assisted dying in Scotland. We’re now right on the cusp of Liam McArthur’s Proposed Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill being published, which is testament to the determination of our client to make this a reality. We were delighted to join DiD in a packed Holyrood Room at the Scottish Parliament along with Patron, Dame Prue Leith, who told MSPs she hopes Scotland will “lead the way” in the UK by passing new laws on assisted dying. This is a deeply personal and emotive piece of legislation so we were pleased to see so many MSPs in the room to listen to advocates talk about the need for this law.

It may have felt like hard work over the years, but the hard work will really start when the Bill is published and the legislative process begins. At Message Matters we are extremely experienced in this process, and we’ll be guiding our client we hope, through all three stages at Holyrood very soon.
